Oops! Burping Too Often? Know The Culprits Behind It And Avoid The Embarrassment



We’ve all experienced it-those sudden, sometimes embarrassing bursts of gas escaping from our mouths, commonly known as burps. It often catches us off guard and leaves us wondering why it happens. So what causes this phenomenon, and why does it occur? Nutritionist Neha Sahaya, in an Instagram post, helps us understand what burping is and what foods cause it so you can avoid it from occurring whenever you are stepping out or meeting someone. Don’t worry, it’s not as mysterious as it seems!

Does Burping Mean Acidity?

Burping, often associated with acidity, is actually a natural process that helps release excess air trapped in the stomach. Burping is typically harmless and often indicates an excess of air in the stomach. However, when burps take on an unpleasant odour resembling rotten eggs, it could indicate the presence of Hydrogen Sulphide gas, possibly signalling improper digestion or other underlying issues.

Neha Sahaya explains that Hydrogen sulphide gas is generated when bacteria in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract break down food, resulting in unpleasant burps or flatulence.

Eating Habits And Burp: What Causes Burping?

1. Swallowing Air

When you eat or drink, you may unintentionally swallow air, especially if you eat quickly, or chew gum, air can build up in your stomach as a burp.

2. Carbonated Beverages

Carbonated drinks contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas, which can be released as gas bubbles in your stomach.

3. Overeating

Consuming large meals can put pressure on your stomach, causing it to expand and leading to the release of excess gas through burping.

4. Digestive Disorders

Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, or peptic ulcers can cause excessive burping.

5. Smoking

Smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products can cause you to swallow air.

6. Certain Foods

Some foods produce more gas in the digestive system, such as beans, cabbage, broccoli, onions, and carbonated beverages. These foods can contribute to burping in susceptible individuals. Foods like Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, garlic, dairy products, milk, and beer can also trigger sulphur burps.
