JAMMU: At least three jawans were killed and three more injured as terrorists ambushed two Army vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Thursday, officials said.
The vehicles came under attack in the Savni area on the Rajouri-Thanamandi-Surankote road around 3.30 PM.
They were carrying jawans from an area near Bufliaz where a cordon-and-search operation against terrorists has been underway since Wednesday night.
The terrorists fired upon the vehicles, a truck and a Gypsy, leaving at least three jawans injured and killing three more, the officials said.
A defence PRO said, “Based on hard intelligence a joint operation was launched. Last night, contact was established today evening and the encounter is in progress. Further details are being ascertained. Additional forces have been rushed to the spot,” the officials said.
Last month, four Army personnel, including two captains, were killed and two others were injured during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.
The Rajouri encounter came close on the heels of another gunfight in Behrote in the Budhal area on November 17, in which one terrorist was killed.
Two earlier ambushes in the Mendhar area of Poonch and Kandi forest of Rajouri on April 20 and May 5 respectively had claimed the lives of 10 soldiers.
According to officials, 46 deaths have been recorded in terrorism-related incidents in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch and nearby Reasi district since January this year.
While 23 people, including seven terrorists and nine security personnel, were killed in Rajouri, 15 terrorists and five security personnel have been killed in Poonch district.
Three terrorists were killed in the Reasi district.
