Vatican shares photos of Pope Francis in open coffin, funeral date to be decided

The Vatican has released the first images of Pope Francis, showing him lying in his casket while the Vatican Secretary of State prays over him. The photos mark the beginning of an official farewell to the late pontiff, as preparations for his funeral continue.

Cardinals met on Tuesday to plan the funeral, which will be attended by world leaders before a conclave next month to elect a new pope. The Vatican expects the ceremony to take place sometime between Friday and Sunday.

Francis, 88, died on Monday after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. During his tenure he clashed with traditionalists and championed the poor and marginalised.

Earlier this year, Francis spent five weeks in the hospital battling double pneumonia. He returned to the Vatican nearly a month ago and appeared to be recovering, making a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.

His death triggered ancient rituals, including the breaking of the pope’s Fisherman’s Ring and lead seal, ensuring they cannot be used by anyone else.

“We want to thank the Lord for the gifts he has given to the whole Church with the apostolic ministry of Pope Francis, a pilgrim of hope,” said Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, who led prayers in St. Peter’s Square on Monday evening.

The Vatican has invited all cardinals currently in Rome to gather at 9 am for discussions on funeral arrangements.

Amongst the world leaders expected to attend the funeral is US President Donald Trump, who clashed repeatedly with Francis on immigration issues. Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, will also be present to honour the pope, who hailed from his country.

In a break from tradition, Francis confirmed in his final testament that he wished to be buried in Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary Major, rather than St. Peter’s Basilica.

The gathering of cardinals will also oversee the daily operations of the Church during the transition period before the election of a new pope.
